Light opal is the tradition. It can become a beautiful cabochon with iridescent reflections, but it can also turn into a leaf with delicate pastel colors. Its body can be milk white, clear translucent and can also be transparent or semi-transparent as in the case of crystal opal. Coober Pedy in South Australia is the main mining area where light opal is mined.
In the official nomenclature and classification it is referred to as "Natural Opal Type 1" and N7, N8 and N9 for its body tone.
